Equity futures opened the overnight session with a surge but have spent the last several hours giving it back. /ES peaked at 7693.75 and has since fallen to 7584.75, sitting at just 11% of its globex range, while /NQ has shed nearly 575 points from its session high entering the cash open. SPY is effectively flat vs Monday's close at +0.15%, while QQQ is gapping up +0.67% — a split that matters given the very different volatility and positioning regimes across those two products.
Under the surface, dealers are short gamma across the board: SPX net GEX reads -$61.76B, SPY -$10.56B, QQQ -$5.98B, and IWM -$1.67B. In a negative gamma regime, price swings in either direction can be amplified rather than dampened. Add VIX at 20.89 in an elevated regime with VVIX holding at 110.47 — signaling high volatility-of-volatility — and today's session opens with conditions that favor sharp intraday moves. AAPL's -4.12% pre-market drop adds a concrete headwind to the Nasdaq complex.
GEX walls are price levels where dealers hedge aggressively. Price tends to gravitate toward Max Pain and stall near walls.
