Thursday delivered one of the sharpest intraday rotations of the quarter: QQQ shed 2.55% while IWM surged 1.11%, a divergence of more than 360 basis points between large-cap tech and small-caps in a single session. Over $600M in 0DTE QQQ put sweeps at the open — across five separate strikes from 712 to 716 — signaled institutional conviction that tech was headed lower, and the tape delivered exactly that.
The structural damage in tech is real: QQQ closed at 707.12, well below its 724 max pain level and far from the 720 call wall, while SPY closed at 765.79, just above the 765 put wall but below both max pain (769) and the call wall (770). Small-caps told the opposite story, with IWM closing at 284.41, above its 284.08 VWAP and pressing directly against the 285 call wall. The rotation isn't noise — it's the defining positioning story heading into Friday, October 30.
GEX walls are price levels where dealers hedge aggressively. Price tends to gravitate toward Max Pain and stall near walls.
