Markets are opening higher this morning, with SPY gapping up +0.43% and IWM leading the charge at +0.81% vs yesterday's close. Gold is surging +2.08% pre-market while equity breadth shows only 27 advancing stocks vs 1,786 declining on the NYSE — a striking divergence between index price and underlying tape quality.
Today is Vixpiration — the monthly VIX settlement — layered on top of a 0DTE expiration cycle for SPY, QQQ, and SPX. With VIX sitting at 15.47 and VVIX at 92.87, vol-of-vol is contained, but the combination of deeply negative GEX across all three major ETFs and 69% of SPY volume coming from 0DTE contracts makes for a structurally volatile session beneath the surface. The gap up is real, but so are the headwinds.
GEX walls are price levels where dealers hedge aggressively. Price tends to gravitate toward Max Pain and stall near walls.
